Re “Brown signs exception to texting while driving,” July 14

Gov. Jerry Brown is just being consistent with his previous veto of a bill that substantially increased the penalties for using a cellphone while driving. What I find irresponsible is the comment by Assemblyman Jeff Miller (R-Corona) that AB 1536 “will allow Californians to communicate safely and responsibly while on the road.”

Though the use of any hands-free device may be less risky than manually texting, it is far from safe. Research shows that using even a hands-free device poses an increased risk of an accident. Our obsessive need to communicate while driving has killed thousands.

Addiction to our devices has gotten the better of us. We must technologically disable all cell towers from handling calls from moving phones. Only when we shut off cellphone usage will we have a chance for safe and responsible driving.
