Letters: Modernizing the electoral college

Share

Re “Founders’ choice: electoral college,” Oct. 25

The electoral college no longer works as our founders intended. By basing it on population, it was clear that they wanted a state with 10 times the population of another to get 10 times the electoral votes.

With our population growing, Congress capped the size of the House at 435 members. Because of that cap, all of the states with the minimum three electoral votes now have disproportionate say in elections. California, for example, has more than 60 times the population of Wyoming but only 18 times the electoral votes.

As for the claim that small states would be irrelevant without the electoral college, only New Hampshire is getting any attention this year.

Either eliminate the electoral college or at least remove the two senators from each state’s count. It still wouldn’t be as the founders set it up, but it would be much fairer.
