Gay Marriages and Society

Re “Foes of Gay Marriage Find New Momentum,” Aug. 1: I’m feeling low and literally beaten up by my president, the pope and anyone else who seems determined to declare war on unions of gays and lesbians. My dreaded “gay agenda” includes getting my kids dressed, fed and off to school, while worrying if they’ll be safe in addition to getting the best education. My partner of 16 years stays home to care for them while I go to work each day, cutting corners on ourselves so that we can put money away for college and make sure they are loved, happy, healthy and intellectually satiated every day.

How do I explain to them why their parents (“You are the best moms in the whole world!”) are despised by a great number of people who have never even met them, and particularly by those in power positions who can jeopardize our happy little family? It’s a sad day when good, righteous taxpayers are labeled “sinners” because of whom they love -- by a man who espouses hate and war and doesn’t see the irony in establishing legal barriers to actively prevent certain citizens from establishing long-term family bonds. Isn’t that what “family values” means?

Finally a formal body, the Vatican, has the courage to take a stand against the “homosexualization” of our society. Surely gay rights groups and the extreme left in this nation’s media will scream “intolerance” and “hate,” but nothing is further from the truth. What two people choose to do in the privacy of their own home is entirely their business. However, the virulent propaganda spread by the homosexual lobby in order to normalize this behavior is wrong and should be contradicted by all in society. What I find most ironic and sad is how a country that has abolished the right to any public discourse or display of faith or religion is trumpeting homosexuality as normal.

The pope wants lawmakers around the world to defend the common good of society by fighting the legalization of gay marriages. I think society would be better served if lawmakers around the world prosecuted and imprisoned pedophile priests and those in the Catholic Church who hide and protect them.

The Vatican states that gay marriage would “cause a devaluation of the institution of marriage.” If the TV shows “The Bachelor,” “The Bachelorette” and “Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?” haven’t done that already, two guys sharing a house isn’t going to do it either.
