Re “Force with diplomacy,” Opinion, Aug. 28

Except when facing imminent attack, it would be insane for the United States to use force against Russia, China or any other nation capable of nuclear or significant conventional retaliation. However, when a weak and non-nuclear nation or group threatens our principles or vital interests, limited force may be justified after all diplomatic efforts have failed to resolve the situation.

We must accept the reality of the Nuclear Age: Because we are no longer the only big boy on the block, we cannot use force to impose our will wherever and whenever we choose.

Except in unusual circumstances, diplomacy must be the weapon of choice.
