Beverly Hills’ plan to nab speeders

Share

Re “Camera-Sly in Beverly Hills,” May 16

Pity the poor residents of Beverly Hills. For years they prevented the construction of a subway line that would pass through their city on its way from Santa Monica to downtown. Now they are unhappy because too many cars drive through Beverly Hills every day. Rather than expending their energy seeking a law-enforcement solution to this problem, such as their proposed speed-trap cameras, they should jump on the mass transit bandwagon and demand that a line be built along Wilshire or Santa Monica boulevards.

Maybe the resultant cleaner air and quieter neighborhoods might even boost their property values.

One has to wonder about the true motives of people who always protest these types of measures to enforce the law. As long as you’re not breaking the law, you should have nothing to worry about. Who in good conscience can object to a measure that will invariably save lives and taxpayer dollars?

Maybe Beverly Hills could avoid the privacy issue by piggybacking on the federal government. I bet most of those West L.A. motorists taking back roads through Beverly Hills are using cell phones at least twice during their trip. Using the same records obtained by the National Security Agency and using global positioning satellites, it would be possible to compute how fast drivers are going through the city and ticket those whose average speed exceeds the speed limit.
