Unocal in Myanmar
Re “Pipeline to Justice?” June 15: Thanks for that fascinating but disturbing Sunday Report. For better or worse, our corporations that do business overseas act as representatives of the American people and our system of governance. When a company like Unocal gets involved in the human rights abuses committed by the Burmese (Myanmar) military, we must hold it responsible.
The Bush administration has few or no ties with that regime because of its known brutality. Why is it not critical on this issue, though? The Justice Department opposes the use of the Alien Tort Claims Act, which allows these corporations and dictators to be tried in U.S. courts.
