A Clinton run in 2016? Bill and Hillary send mixed signals [Video]

Bill Clinton sounds like he is hoping his wife, Hillary, has a presidential run in her. As for Hillary, she’s just looking for some R&R.

In separate interviews that aired Monday on MSNBC (watch below), the former president and the current secretary of State were both asked about the speculation as to Hillary Rodham Clinton’s political future, always a favorite topic of politicos.

Hillary Clinton’s latest answer was much like her previous ones: not completely shutting the door, but signaling it was a long shot.

“It’s very flattering, but, you know, I’m not at all planning to do that. I have no, you know, desire or intention,” Clinton told Andrea Mitchell in an interview from Istanbul.

“I want to do the best job I can as the secretary of State for this president. I want to then take some time to get reconnected to, you know, the stuff that makes life worth living, you know, family, friends, the sort of activities that I enjoy. And I’ll do some writing and some speaking, and I’m sure I’ll be continuing to advocate on these issues.”

Bill Clinton, who was his wife’s chief surrogate in her 2008 presidential run, said a decision about 2016 was entirely up to her.

“She’s told you and everybody else that she thinks she’ll probably never run for office again. But I’ve been there,” he told Luke Russert. “I know what happens when you go through this decompression, after years of relentless high-pressure activity. And I just think she needs to rest up, do some things she cares about and whatever she decides to do, I’ll support.”

As eager as Clinton might be for his wife to run again, his immediate political interest is in helping the current president win another four years.

Clinton told Russert that he’ll be doing three joint fundraisers this year with President Obama; other campaign travel is likely too.

“I look forward to making the best case I can for why I think he should be reelected,” he said.
