Palestinian police killed two Hamas militants after three men opened fire at security forces who had surrounded their underground hide-out, officials said.

One officer was also killed in the operation, part of an intensifying crackdown on Islamic militants in the West Bank town of Kalkilya.

The gunmen were huddled in a hole dug in the courtyard of a home in Kalkilya, and two of them were killed after rejecting pleas by relatives to surrender.

Palestinian security forces discovered the hide-out under a vase placed on top of a large metal tray in the courtyard, said an officer with the Preventive Security Service.

The men opened fire from below, killing an officer and wounding another.

The raid marked the second attack on a Hamas hide-out in Kalkilya this week.
