Fatal Collapse in Bangladesh
A six-story building housing shops and offices in Bangladesh’s capital collapsed Saturday with about 100 people inside, killing at least 15 and injuring dozens, rescue workers said.
Thirteen bodies were pulled from the rubble of the building in Dhaka’s central Tejgaon industrial district, said Army Brig. Gen. Nizam Ahmed, who was overseeing the rescue operation. Two people died en route to a hospital.
Witnesses said some of the people in the building operated shops on the ground floor.
One witness said most of those injured or killed appeared to be construction workers who were adding a new story to the building, which was being converted into a medical center. Witnesses said pedestrians were also among the victims.
Soldiers and firefighters sifted through the rubble of the building looking for survivors.
