The heat was on Monday in Southern California, with temperatures in downtown Los Angeles reaching 95 degrees in the early afternoon -- making it the hottest Nov. 6 since authorities started keeping records 129 years ago.

But cooler days should be on the way. The National Weather Service predicts that temperatures will edge down over the coming days and, by Thursday, the high downtown should be somewhat cooler than usual, in the low 70s.

“Just that quick, it turns around. We’ll be back to our fall-ish weather,” said Bonnie Bartling, a weather information specialist in the Oxnard office of the National Weather Service.

The previous record high downtown for Nov. 6, since records for the area started being kept in 1877, was 92, set in 1898.

The hottest spot in the region Monday was Woodland Hills, where the mercury climbed to 97. That was the hottest Nov. 6 on record for that west San Fernando Valley location, breaking the old record of 94, set in 1991.

High temperature marks for the date were set at Los Angeles International Airport, which posted 91 degrees, up from 89 degrees in 1956; and in Long Beach, where the temperature hit 94, versus the old record of 86 in 1961.
