An eruption on Dec. 14, 1989, that sent volcanic ash, ice blocks as large as 33 feet across and mudslides sweeping down the Drift River valley was just the first of 23 major explosive events from the Redoubt volcano between December 1989 and April 1990.
The next day, a Boeing 747 aircraft's four engines failed when flying through a volcanic ash cloud 45,000 feet about Redoubt. The airplane narrowly avoided crashing when its engines restarted about 4,000 feet above ground.
