Volcán Arenal, which towers above Lake Arenal, is one of Costa Rica's most active volcanoes -- at night tourists often watch the volcano's continuous explosive activity from lodges nearby. Glowing orange lava flows, ash columns and sudden minor explosions occur almost daily.
The last major eruption occurred on July 29, 1968, killing 87 people and burying three nearby villages. Since then, the local population has moved to a safe distance from the active volcano.
