Animation animus

Joel Pett is the Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist of the Lexington Herald-Leader. His work also appears in USA Today.
Walt Handelsman of Newsday won his second Pulitzer Prize last week, and the big buzz in our little corner of the journalism world is that, for the first time, the judges accepted online animations. Handelsman submitted 10 of them, in addition to 10 print cartoons, a sampling of which you see here. (The animations and the other cartoons are at Newsday.com/walt.) Both other finalists — Mike Thompson of the Detroit Free Press and Nick Anderson of the Houston Chronicle — also submitted animation. Handelsman says he spent about 40 hours apiece on the talking-head spots. Now editors are going to expect us cartoonists to chain ourselves to the computer until we’re adroit at animation. Thanks a lot, guys.
