Letters: A savior to burn victims
Re “Specialist in burn treatment,” Obituary, March 15
As a young man in 1993, I was involved in an accident that caused third-degree burns to 30% of my body. The ambulance took me from Long Beach to a small hospital in Sherman Oaks. That was the longest ride in my life.
It was also the ride that saved my life.
At that hospital, I was to be graced with help of Dr. A. Richard Grossman, who had started a burn center there years earlier. My injuries were serious. But thanks to the state-of-art procedures performed by Grossman, my body survived.
But what truly saved me was how Grossman cared for me as a person. His bedside words and, later, occasional calls to my home were what saved my life. As Grossman understood, burn victims must heal in both body and mind. Thank you, Dr. Grossman. I will never forget you.
