Readers React: Not all fast food is bad for you

To the editor: The headline and the copy in this article distort the food and nutrition issues challenging consumers today. It’s not honest to imply that an entire sector of the food industry — in this case, fast food — is unhealthy. (“Bye-bye, burgers: New fast-food chains bet on healthy eating,” Nov. 2)

Despite the slam in the headline, hamburgers provide a strong source of protein and some carbohydrates. It’s often the side dishes and beverages that make or break a meal.

Tender Greens offers delicious food, but restaurateurs cater to everyone. The chain still offers sugar-sweetened beverages, starchy sides and delectable desserts. A more honest story would acknowledge that other fast-food restaurants continue to offer a wider range of healthful food choices. That is good news.

We live in a city where one-third of the residents make less than the proposed minimum wage of $13.25 as hour. How many can afford $15 or $20 to go out to lunch?

Everyone deserves an opportunity to eat better.
