New location, same festive feel at Hospitality Night in Laguna

Hospitality Night in Laguna Beach on Friday had a slightly different look from previous years, but the same cheerful feeling.

Hundreds of people ushered in the holiday season by celebrating the annual tree lighting at the Peppertree parking lot.

Mayor Toni Iseman led the crowd in a countdown as the tree cast a glow from white lights that dangled from every limb.

The ceremony moved from its former spot in front of City Hall to the lot between Forest and Ocean avenues.

Laguna staff said the lot is a larger gathering place and also allowed them to keep Third Street open to cars.

But the move was also spurred because the 135-year-old pepper tree in front of City Hall that stood 36 feet tall was reduced to 12 feet in some places earlier this year.

Arborists said the tree, which the city strung with lights during previous Hospitality Night events, was structurally unstable and in danger of falling.

Portions of Forest and Ocean avenues were closed to cars, allowing attendees to stroll along while sipping hot chocolate or eating popcorn and cookies.

Performances from multiple bands, including the Laguna Community Concert Band, added to the holiday spirit with classic carols such as “We Need a Little Christmas.”
