Vets get free surf lessons

Veterans got a chance to learn how to surf when Team Red, White & Blue joined the VA Greater Los Angeles in offering free lessons in Huntington Beach.

Team Red, White & Blue is a nonprofit based in Florida whose “mission is to enrich the lives of America’s veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity,” according to its website.

More than 35 injured veterans attempted to tackle the waves July 16 during the fourth annual Waves of Valor Surf Camp, which was supervised by 150 veteran and civilian volunteers.

“Our athletes’ injuries range from PTSD to amputees,” RWB spokesperson Jodie Merkle in a news release. “Waves of Valor provides a unique opportunity for both civilians and veterans to make a dramatic difference in a veteran’s life.”
