Youth Scene: Vanguard Aquatics has strong showing in K7 Cup

Vanguard Aquatics of Huntington Beach took several honors in youth club water polo action at the K7 Cup tournament.

The two-day event was held at various locations in Orange County, and the Cap Cup state finals were held on the same dates in Clovis.

Below lists the tournament results and divisions played by the various Vanguard teams:

10-and-Under Coed, third-place, 10U Platinum Division (coached by Sale Petrovic and Kaileigh Esson); 12U Silver Boys, champion, 12U Platinum Division (coached by Zachary Kappos); 12U Blue Boys, ninth, 14U Platinum Division (coached by Nemanja Jakonvic and Brian Anderson); 14U Silver Boys, fourth, 14U Platinum Division (coached by Nick Graffis); 14U Blue Boys, champion, 16U Platinum Division (coached by Sasa Branisavljevic); 14U Blue Girls, seventh, 14U Platinum Division (coached by Milos Skaljac); 16U Boys Silver, sixth, 16U Gold Division (coached by Zach Kappos and Brian Anderson); 16U Boys Blue, fifth, Cal Cup state finals (coached by Chris Kaps); 18U Boys Blue, fifth, Cal Cup state finals (coached by Pavle Filipovic).

The nationally-ranked Vanguard program is gearing up for upcoming tournaments at the San Diego County Cup which is Friday through Sunday and May 13-15, and the National Junior Olympic Zone Qualifying Tournament June 3-5.

Yankees 5, Nationals 2: The Yankees started fast and held on to beat the Nationals in running their winning streak to 10 games.

The first-place Yankees (10-1) started the game with four straight hits by Daniel Kotkosky, A.J. Hurtado, Gavin Kells and Andrew Bentley, each of whom ended up scoring. Fast starts are nothing new for the Yankees. who in the previous week against the Tigers began that game with six straight hits.

Kells and Dylan Villanueva, both with two hits, led the Yankees on offense. Kotkosky, Hurtado, Bentley, Jake Alvarez, Van Harmon and Dominic Riola each had one hit.

After the Yankees first inning fireworks, the pitchers and defense for both teams ruled. Kotkosky started for the Yankees and gave up only one run in 3 1/3 innings. Kells relieved Kotkosky in the fourth and completed the game. Antonio Ventimiglia pitched scoreless innings in the third, fourth and fifth for the Nationals.

Ventimiglia, Roman Cianca (two RBIs), Kyle Palmer, Landon Runyan and Spencer Baker had hits for the Nationals.
