Briefs: Free basketball clinic at Ocean View

A Spring Basketball Clinic is being offered free of charge Monday at Ocean View High.

The camp is open to youth grades second through eighth and will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Jim Harris Gymnasium. The Ocean View basketball staff will lead campers in a night of fundamentals and skill development.

Team USA wins gold

The USA Water Polo Men’s National Team captured the gold medal at the FINA Men’s Intercontinental Tournament Sunday by defeating Australia, 10-9, at Yokohama, Japan.

Bret Bonanni of Huntington Beach scored twice and Luca Cupido (Newport Beach) scored the last of his team-high three goals with two seconds left to lift Team USA to the title. Cupido’s second goal came with just over one minute to play and tied the score at 9-9.

Team USA went 6-0 at the tournament with two wins against Australia (8-6 in a tourney opener), Japan, Kazakhstan, Brazil, and China. Five teams (USA, Australia, Japan, Brazil, China) qualified for the FINA World League Super Final in June in China.

The USA Men’s National Team next will play a two-game series with Australia starting with a 7 p.m. match Friday at Pomona-Pitzer College in Claremont.

Waves summer camp

The BB Waves Girls Basketball program will run a Youth Summer Camp June 27-29 at the Huntington Beach High gymnasium (1905 Main Street). The camp is open to youth grades second through eighth and runs daily from 9 to 11 a.m.

Edison football fundraiser

The Edison High football program will hold its annual golf tournament June 27 at SeaCliff Country Club in Huntington Beach (6501 Palm Avenue). The cost for the tournament is $200 and includes golf, a box lunch, barbecue dinner and goodies bag. The guest of honor for the event is former Edison coach Russ Purnell who went on to coach at USC and the past 20 years in the NFL with Super Bowl wins with the Indianapolis Colts (2006, special teams coordinator) and Baltimore Ravens (2000, special teams coordinator). He was assistant special teams coach for the 2015 season with the Carolina Panthers.

Moose Invitational June 27

The 11th annual Fountain Valley Football Boosters/Michael Musso Memorial Moose Invitational Golf Tournament will be held June 27 at Mile Square Golf Course (10401 Warner Ave.) in Fountain Valley.

The tournament includes a four-person scramble and contests for longest drive, closest-to-the-pin and putting. The cost is $150 per golfer and covers green fees, cart fees, practice range, door prizes/gift bags, a buffet lunch and banquet dinner. Registration is 11 a.m., shotgun start 1 p.m., and banquet dinner begins at 6 p.m.

The annual golf tournament helps raise money for the Fountain Valley High football program and the Michael Musso Memorial Fund. Musso, a 2004 graduate of Fountain Valley High School, died in a car accident in July 2005. Through the fundraiser, a scholarship is given to a four-year Baron football player each year.

Baseball camp

A three-day Charger Baseball Camp for youth ages nine to 14 (pre-high school) will be held June 28-30 at Edison High (21400 Magnolia Street).

The camp, not affiliated with Edison High, will run from 9 a.m. to noon daily and features a variety of baseball techniques under the instruction and supervision of the Edison High coaching staff (led by head coach Cameron Chinn) and current players.

The cost is $120 per camper and each camper will receive an Edison baseball shirt. All campers are asked to bring a baseball glove, hat, bat and shoes, as well as a jacket/refreshments.
