Trojans may not get line

The big Thanksgiving showdown between USC and Arizona State has the Trojans listed as three-point road favorites, but oddsmakers have not released an over/under line for the game.

That’s major news considering the strong under trend for both football programs.

This season, the under is 9-1 in games featuring USC and 8-2 with the Sun Devils. The under is also 4-0 in the Trojans’ last four games against a team with a winning record and 11-2 in Arizona State’s last 13 games overall.

So bettors hoping to jump on the over/under play for the game may have to settle for a point-spread wager, which has gone in favor of the Sun Devils over the Trojans the last two seasons.

Last year, USC was an 18 1/2 -point favorite but did not cover in a 28-21 victory at the Coliseum. In 2005, the Trojans were favored by 17 points and won, 38-28, at Tempe.

In recent years, Arizona State has done well against the spread as a home underdog, posting an 11-4-1 record in its last 16 games in the role. As a home team overall, it is 5-1 against the spread this season under first-year Coach Dennis Erickson.

But not every positive trend points the way of the Sun Devils. They failed to cover the line in their last two games (a loss at Oregon and win at UCLA) and Erickson is only 23-20-3 against the spread in his last four seasons as coach.

Showdown add: Although USC is only 5-5 against the spread this season, the Trojans are 7-0 against the spread in their last seven games as road favorites of 3 1/2 to 10 points under Coach Pete Carroll.

Michigan’s Lloyd Carr wasn’t finished announcing his retirement before oddsmakers had numbers ready on who would succeed him as the Wolverines’ next coach. Here’s bodoglife.com’s list of odds on Michigan’s coaching vacancy: Les Miles (3-1), Kirk Ferentz (9-2), Mike Trgovac (5-1), Brian Kelly (6-1), Ron English (6-1), Bret Bielema (7-1), Bobby Petrino (8-1), Jon Gruden (10-1), Jim Harbaugh (10-1), Bill Cowher (15-1) and the field (2-1).

Bettors who took NFL favorites had a big weekend last week as favored teams were 10-4-1 against the spread and 13-2 straight up. But for the season, NFL favorites are under .500 against the spread at 74-76-9 and 118-51 outright.
