Dodgers’ Enrique Hernandez to undergo ‘minor’ shoulder surgery

Dodgers utilityman Enrique Hernandez is scheduled to undergo a right-shoulder operation Wednesday. The procedure was described as “minor” by the team, which said more details will be provided after the surgery is completed.

Acquired last winter as part of a trade that sent eventual NL batting champion Dee Gordon to the Miami Marlins, Hernandez batted .307 with seven home runs and 22 runs batted in over 76 games with the Dodgers.

Hernandez, 24, was particularly effective against left-handed pitchers, batting .423.

Hernandez played all three outfield positions, as well as second base, shortstop and third base. He replaced a slumping Joc Pederson as the team’s first-choice center fielder in mid-August, only to go down with a strained hamstring at the end of the month.

Hernandez’s operation will be performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

ElAttrache also performed surgeries earlier this off-season on third baseman Justin Turner (left knee) and catcher Yasmani Grandal (left shoulder).
