Dodgers’ Hyun-Jin Ryu expected to miss next start

Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly said Thursday he isn’t counting on Hyun-Jin Ryu to make his next start.

“I don’t feel like his chances are very good of pitching on his turn,” Mattingly said.

Ryu strained a right buttock muscle in the Dodgers’ 3-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night. The left-hander appeared to be walking with a limp Thursday morning, and Mattingly confirmed that the left-hander is “still feeling something.”

Ryu’s next turn in the rotation falls on Tuesday. If he can’t pitch, Roberto Hernandez would be available that day on regular four-days’ rest, as the Dodgers have a day off Monday. Another option would be to start swingman Kevin Correia.

Hanley Ramirez, who is on the disabled list with a strained right side muscle, played catch on Wednesday.

The Dodgers initially thought Ramirez would need seven to 10 days to recover. Mattingly said Thursday that could still be the case.

The typical recovery time for a strained oblique muscle is about a month, but Mattingly said, “We don’t feel like it’s going to be a month.”

Josh Beckett will be eligible to return from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday, but Mattingly said there are no plans to activate him.

Beckett has a torn labrum in his left hip, but Mattingly said he thinks the pitcher has a chance of taking the mound again this season. Mattingly said Beckett is scheduled to be examined in the near future.
