Dodgers fantasy camp to return to ‘Historic’ Dodgertown

There now, see what happens when people actually try to get along? As opposed to not cooperating and making legal threats.

When Frank McCourt owned the Dodgers he moved their spring training home from Vero Beach, Fla., to Phoenix in 2009. There were practical reasons involved and the Camelback facility the Dodgers share with the Chicago White Sox is very nice. But it is absolutely not special or unique in any fashion, and it’s light years away from the romance of Dodgertown.

When McCourt split from Vero Beach, he essentially wanted nothing to do with the team’s spring home for the previous 61 years. He wouldn’t even allow Dodgertown to continue calling itself Dodgertown.

The Dodgers Guggenheim group is much more logical and connected to history. it reached an agreement for the Florida facility, now operated by former owner Peter O’Malley, to be called Historic Dodgertown.

And now the Dodgers have entered an agreement with Historic Dodgertown to return their adult baseball fantasy camp there.

The camp is scheduled for Nov. 9-15 at Dodgertown. It’s not cheap -- $4,995 – but the all-inclusive week includes lodging at the complex, complete use of the grounds, three meals a day and, of course, the one-on-one training and interaction with former Dodgers.

The ex-Dodgers who will participate in the camp have yet to be announced, but former Dodgers who have served as instructors in the past have included Tommy Lasorda, Carl Erskine, Ralph Branca, Don Zimmer, Steve Garvey, Ron Cey, Bill Russell, Davey Lopes, Rick Monday, Reggie Smith, Steve Yeager, Burt Hooton, Mike Scioscia and Jerry Reuss.

“The Dodgers are delighted our fans will have the opportunity to interact with Dodger legends and experience the wonders of Historic Dodgertown at the adult baseball camp,” team President and Chief Executive Stan Kasten said in a release. “Historic Dodgertown plays an integral role in the lore of Dodger baseball and the camp will surely provide lasting memories for all participants.”

It will be the first fantasy camp back at Dodgertown since 2008.

Kasten and the new owners get it. Win-win for everyone. Seems so simple.
