Kings defenseman Robyn Regehr says he’ll probably retire

Defenseman Robyn Regehr, who accomplished his ultimate career goal by winning a Stanley Cup with the Kings last year, said he probably played his last NHL game.

“I think it’s time to move on to the next chapter in life,” Regehr said after Saturday’s regular-season finale, a 4-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks at Staples Center.

Regehr, who turns 35 on April 19, started his NHL career in 1999 with the Flames and would later play for Darryl Sutter in Calgary. He was reunited with Sutter when the Kings acquired him in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres on April 1, 2013.

In 67 games, Regehr, the ultimate stay-at-home defenseman, had three goals and 13 points with a plus-nine rating this season.

“There’s a lot that goes into a decision like that,” he said. “I’ve been thinking about it for a little while. You’ve got to think about where your body is at and how it’s holding up or not holding up.

“There’s family decisions and all kinds of stuff that are involved in a decision like that. It’s a big decision. But I think we’ve decided.”
