Avengers ready for home stretch

Times Staff Writer

Catching the ball with consistency has never been a problem for the Avengers’ Kevin Ingram, who has had at least one reception in his last 27 regular-season games and has caught more than one pass in every game this season.

But that’s not what drives Ingram. Winning does, and the Avengers -- who have won their last two games -- are primed for a strong finish to the regular season. They play five of their last seven games at home, after playing five of their first seven on the road.

“We have some games coming up against teams that we should definitely beat,” Ingram said of the Avengers (5-4), who will play host to the Tampa Bay Storm (3-6) tonight at Staples Center.

With Sonny Cumbie emerging as one of the top young quarterbacks in the Arena Football League, Ingram expects big things down the stretch.

“Stuff that happened against us, we really couldn’t control,” said Ingram, who had 149 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns in a 59-37 victory at Las Vegas last week. “We had a lot of injuries and it takes time to get everybody ready to go.”
