Cardinals exec Bill DeWitt Jr. to lead search for new MLB commissioner

St. Louis Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. will lead the committee to find a successor to baseball Commissioner Bud Selig.

Chicago White Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf also is on the seven-member panel announced Thursday, which includes Colorado Chairman Dick Monfort, Philadelphia President Dave Montgomery, Angels owner Arte Moreno, Pittsburgh Chairman Bob Nutting and Minnesota CEO Jim Pohlad.

The committee is to identify the candidate or candidates for Major League Baseball’s executive council, which is to make a recommendation to owners. A 75% vote among 30 clubs is needed for election.

Selig, who has headed baseball since 1992, announced last fall he plans to retire in January.

New York Yankees outfielder Carlos Beltran was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday because a pain-relief injection did not ease the effects of a bone spur in his right elbow. ... The Toronto Blue Jays put outfielder Colby Rasmus on the 15-day DL because of a sore right hamstring and recalled outfielder Anthony Gose from triple-A Buffalo. ...

The Cleveland Indians placed outfielder Nyjer Morgan on the 15-day DL because of a sprained right knee. The Oakland Athletics acquired outfielder and first baseman Kyle Blanks from the San Diego Padres in exchange for minor league outfielder Jake Goebbert and a player to be named.
