Baron Davis is latest to get flu

Flu season, or some close imitation of it, appears to have hit the Clippers a bit early.

Marcus Camby, now sidelined because of a bruised right heel, sat out most of the first week of training camp because of flu-like symptoms. Then Baron Davis trudged off the court near the end of practice Monday looking somewhat flat.

It had been an active 24 hours for Davis. He appeared, and spoke, at the “Every Women for Obama” rally on Sunday afternoon at his old haunt, Pauley Pavilion, and then hit the road and watched his beloved Dodgers beat Philadelphia, 7-2, in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series at Dodger Stadium.

Now he is out with flu-like symptoms, and won’t make the trip for the Clippers’ exhibition tonight at Oklahoma City, Coach Mike Dunleavy said. Davis may join his teammates in time for Wednesday’s exhibition against Sacramento at Stockton.

Taylor time

Davis’ absence will mean even more playing time for rookie point guard Mike Taylor, who scored 20 points against the Lakers on Thursday at Fresno. Even before Dunleavy knew Davis would sit out tonight’s game, he said Taylor would play at least 24 minutes in each of the two games.

“He’s been able to handle running the offense better. I thought it was going to be more of a learning curve,” Dunleavy said. “That’s one of the reasons why we went out and got Jason Williams, kind of a safety net. A veteran guy. Then we will bring him [Taylor] along slowly. But when Jason decided to retire . . . at least it didn’t burn us time in trying to develop this kid. Because I think he’s got a good upside.

“We’ll find out in a hurry and we’ll know where we’ll have to go.”

Taylor didn’t need to be told about the door of opportunity opening wider.

“When I heard about it, my agent first told me about it, I was kind of all smiles,” he said last week. “Kind of feeling a little joy. Because that was my opportunity to play. I knew they would give me a look. And I knew I had to be ready.”

Tim Thomas (strained left groin) and Camby are out for tonight’s game. Paul Davis (strained finger) and Eric Gordon (right ankle sprain) are probable. Dunleavy wasn’t sure about DeAndre Jordan’s playing status.
