Matt Holliday and the St. Louis Cardinals take down the Dodgers, 3-2

KEY MOMENT: Adrian Gonzalez singled and Matt Kemp drew a walk with one out in the eighth inning and the Dodgers trailing, 3-2. Miguel Rojas pinch-ran for Gonzalez, but didn’t score, as Andre Ethier struck out and Juan Uribe popped up to catcher Tony Cruz in foul territory. For Ethier, the strikeout was his third of the night.

ON THE MOUND: Dan Haren lost his third consecutive start, as he was charged with three runs and eight hits over 4 2/3 innings. Haren served up a two-run home run to Matt Holliday in the fifth inning that increased the Cardinals’ lead to 3-0. The bullpen kept the Dodgers within striking distance, as Chris Perez, Paco Rodriguez and Brandon League combined to pitch 31/3 scoreless innings.

AT THE PLATE: Held scoreless in the first five innings by Cardinals starter Lance Lynn, the Dodgers finally broke through in the sixth, when A.J. Ellis doubled in Uribe and later scored on a wild pitch. The Dodgers were one for eight with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Kemp struck out with two outs and the bases loaded in the third inning.

ROSTER MOVES: The Dodgers activated utility man Justin Turner from the 15-day disabled list and promoted left-hander Rodriguez from triple-A Albuquerque. Turner had been sidelined since June 29 because of a strained left hamstring. The 29-year-old is batting .302 with three home runs and 21 runs batted in in 59 games. The Dodgers created a place for Turner on their active roster by optioning infielder Carlos Triunfel to Albuquerque. As for Rodriguez, this marks his third time in the major leagues this season. In Rodriguez, Manager Don Mattingly will have a late-inning, left-handed option other than the frequently used J.P. Howell. Rodriguez took the roster spot of right-hander Pedro Baez, who was sent to Albuquerque on Sunday.

MEDICAL REPORT: Josh Beckett appears as if he will be able to start for the Dodgers on Tuesday in Pittsburgh, Mattingly said. Beckett is on the 15-day disabled list because of a left hip injury.
