Dodgers fall flat in 7-0 loss to Phillies
ON THE MOUND: Paul Maholm lasted only five innings and was charged with five runs (four earned) and eight hits. The Phillies blew open the game in the fifth inning, which included a two-run home run by Ryan Howard and a throwing error by Maholm that resulted in another run. Brandon League pitched two scoreless innings. Jose Dominguez also pitched two innings but gave up a two-run home run to Carlos Ruiz in the ninth inning.
AT THE PLATE: Adrian Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to 16 games with an infield single in first inning. Yasiel Puig made an overly adventurous turn around third base on the play, which resulted in his being caught in a rundown for the final out. This was an otherwise stress-free night for Phillies starter Cliff Lee, who retired 20 consecutive batters in a stretch that started in the second inning and ended in the eighth. Lee limited the Dodgers to four hits. He struck out 10.
EXTRA BASES: Chone Figgins was optioned to triple-A Albuquerque to clear a roster spot for Dominguez. In the minors, Figgins is expected to play second and third base, as well as in the outfield. Manager Don Mattingly said he expects Figgins to return to the major leagues at some point. Considering that, Mattingly said, “I don’t think it’s going to be horrible for Figgy to be able to go down and get 25, 30 at-bats.”
JOBE HONORED: The Dodgers named the training room in their clubhouse after the late Dr. Frank Jobe, the inventor of Tommy John surgery. John participated in a pregame ceremony, as did Jobe’s widow and three of Jobe’s sons. Jobe, who worked for the Dodgers for 50 seasons, passed away in March.
