Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger says his arm hurts

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said he isn’t concerned about the “little torn rotator cuff” in his right arm.

“I’m good. It’s OK, just sore,” he said when asked about the injury. “I have a little torn rotator cuff. That doesn’t heal. We just have to hope it doesn’t tear the rest of the way,” he said, laughing.

Roethlisberger’s injury occurred in the Steelers’ Nov. 6 loss to Baltimore. He mentioned it in the spring, but this is the first time he has publicly called it a rotator cuff tear. However, he says it feels fine, that his arm feels strong and that it should not hamper any of his throws.

Wisconsin’s Ball injured in attack

Five men roughed up star Wisconsin running back Montee Ball near campus early Wednesday, inflicting head injuries serious enough to send him to a hospital, authorities said.

Ball was walking down a street about 2:15 a.m. after socializing with friends, police spokesman Joel DeSpain said. Two friends walking ahead of him turned around and saw Ball on the ground. The men had surrounded him and were kicking him in the head and chest, DeSpain said.

One of his friends and a man across the street moved to help Ball and the attackers fled, DeSpain said. Ball was released from the hospital and tweeted to fans, “I will be okay!”

Senior cornerback Greg Reid, one of the nation’s top punt returners, was dismissed from Florida State’s football team for a violation of team rules.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be released from jail in Las Vegas as early as Thursday night, a Las Vegas police spokesman said.

Mayweather, the unbeaten world super-welterweight champion, has been jailed at Clark County (Nev.) Detention Center since June 1 for a 2010 domestic violence crime against the mother of his three children.

He was sentenced to 90 days but was eligible for early release based on good behavior, and jail officials told Mayweather’s attorneys the arrival of additional inmates might accelerate his release, according to a person familiar with the situation but unauthorized to speak publicly about it.

Las Vegas police spokesman Bill Cassell said Mayweather’s release date is Friday but added, “Historically, inmates can be processed out the night before.”

Chivas USA, seven points out of a postseason berth with seven games to play, tried to bolster its playoff run when it acquired New England Revolution midfielder Shalrie Joseph. A four-time Major League Soccer All-Star, Joseph will be counted on to jump-start an offense that ranks last in the league with 14 goals in 20 games.

To get Joseph, 34, who has one goal and three assists in 18 games this season, Chivas sent midfielder Blair Gavin, a SuperDraft second-round pick in 2013 and undisclosed allocation money to New England.

The acquisition of Joseph is the third Chivas General Manager Jose Domene has made since the start of the season. In May he sent defender Heath Pearce and allocation money to the New York Red Bulls for forward Juan Agudelo. In April, Chivas added Colombia striker Jose Erick Correa.

Vania King and Coco Vandeweghe won in the Citi Open at Washington to set up an all-American quarterfinal.

The fourth-seeded King beat Irina Falconi, 6-2, 7-6 (5), and No. 7 Vandeweghe topped qualifier Aravane Rezai, 6-2, 6-2. A third American, third-seeded Sloane Stephens, advanced to the quarterfinals Tuesday.

On the men’s side, fourth-seeded Tommy Haas beat Leonard Mayer, 6-4, 7-5, to set up a quarterfinal with fellow German Tobias Kamke.
