Stephen Curry will not play in the 2016 Olympics

Stephen Curry already has two NBA MVP awards. And he and the Golden State Warriors are two wins away from a second straight league championship.

But one honor Curry has yet to achieve is winning an Olympic medal. It’s something he really wants to do – but he won’t be doing it this summer in Rio de Janeiro.

Curry announced Monday on Twitter he won’t be playing in the 2016 Summer Games, citing “several factors -- including recent ankle and knee injuries.”

“After a great deal of internal thought and several discussions with my family, the Warriors and my representatives, I’ve elected to withdraw my name from the list of eligible players on Team USA’s preliminary roster for the 2016 Summer Games in Brazil,” Curry stated.

Marcus Thompson II of the San Jose Mercury News was the first to report the news.

Curry missed more than four games earlier in the playoffs after spraining his right knee as he slipped on a wet spot on the floor during a game against Houston. And that was after missing the previous two games with a sprained right ankle.

Curry has played with Team USA in the past, including a gold-medal run at the 2014 World Cup. He has never played in the Olympics but is only 28, so he should have another shot at it in 2020.

“My previous experiences with USA Basketball have been incredibly rewarding, educational and enjoyable, which made this an extremely difficult decision for me and my family,” Curry stated. “However, due to several factors -- including recent ankle and knee injuries -- I believe this is the best decision for me at this stage in my career.

“It’s an incredible honor to represent your country and wear ‘USA’ on your chest, but my primary basketball-related objective this summer needs to [be focusing] on my body and getting ready for the 2016-17 NBA season.”

Teammate Andre Iguodala will take the Zika situation in Brazil into consideration if he is chosen for the U.S. team, Thompson reports, but Warriors star Draymond Green will definitely go if selected. They are both in the pool of players from which the final U.S. roster will be chosen.
