A consumer’s guide to the best and worst of sports media and merchandise. Ground rules: If it can be read, played, heard, observed, worn, viewed, dialed or downloaded, it’s in play here. One exception: No products will be endorsed.

What: “Tributes” by Dave Meltzer.

Price: $13.95 at amazon.com.

An astonishing number of professional wrestlers have died over the last five years -- some because of in-ring accidents, others after overdosing on pain pills and alcohol.

But because it’s pro wrestling, no one seems to mind. If eight major league baseball players, or 10 NBA players, died during the season, the outcry would be enormous. But 10 pro wrestlers die in a year and life goes on.

Dave Meltzer, who has published a newsletter, “The Wrestling Observer,” for many years, has written “Tributes,” a book that pays homage to the lives and careers of some of the men who have died recently.

From Owen Hart to “Ravishing” Rick Rude to Andre the Giant, this book is filled with the names of people who left us too soon.

As a long-time subscriber to “The Wrestling Observer Newsletter,” a slightly disappointing aspect of the book is the heavy editing for length.

However, it is nice to have all of these biographies in book form. If you know a wrestling fan, this would make a nice gift.

Meltzer is one of the best writers in any business, and the memories of these wrestlers are in good hands with him.
