Authorities seize gun and rifle from Burress’ home

The bloody pants that Plaxico Burress wore when he accidentally shot himself last month, plus a handgun, a rifle and an assortment of ammunition, were seized Tuesday by authorities from the home of the New York Giants receiver in Totowa, N.J.

In addition to a 9-mm handgun, a .30-06-caliber rifle and the ammunition, including a clip for a .45 gun, police said that during a three-hour search of Burress’ home, they also recovered the sneakers he wore during the accidental shooting.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the weapons are registered, so it is unclear whether Burress will face additional charges.

Burress still faces two felony gun-possession charges following the accidental shooting at a Manhattan nightclub last month.

Benjamin Brafman, the receiver’s criminal attorney, said Wednesday that he believed that only a registered rifle was taken from the home. He did not know whether Burress would face additional charges.

Police said that Burress was not at home during the search by Totowa police, four New York City detectives and a Brafman associate, adding that the player’s wife was present.

Brafman said his client was out of town at the time of the search but did not elaborate.

The Giants suspended Burress for the rest of the season and also withheld $1 million owed to him as part of his signing bonus.

Cowboys’ Romo ill

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo missed practice because of flu-like symptoms but is expected to play Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Tight end Jason Witten also missed practice to ease the strain on his body. He is banged up, with a sprained ankle the biggest concern.

Running back Marion Barber went through drills with the team, but probably will remain a game-time decision because of a dislocated right pinkie toe.

Shaw steps down

John Shaw resigned as St. Louis Rams president after 29 years with the franchise and Billy Devaney was promoted to general manager.

The two moves followed the resignation Monday of Jay Zygmunt as president of football operations. The Rams are 2-13 heading into Sunday’s regular-season finale at Atlanta, and are 5-26 the last two seasons.

Shaw, team president since 1994 and de facto president since 1983 when owner Georgia Frontiere also held that title, will be retained as a senior advisor and owner’s representative based in Los Angeles. Shaw told the Associated Press he was not forced out but rather “quite to the contrary.”

New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker was fined $10,000 by the NFL for a “snow angel” touchdown celebration during the team’s 47-7 win over the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday. NFL spokesman Corry Rush said that Welker was fined by the league for participating in “an illegal demonstration by going to the ground” after a touchdown. . . . Indianapolis Colts Coach Tony Dungy has ruled three players out of Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Tennessee Titans, a list that could grow by week’s end. Dungy said middle linebacker Gary Brackett, outside linebacker Freddy Keiaho and running back Dominic Rhodes will not play against Tennessee. Brackett has missed three straight games since cracking a bone in his lower right leg and is the only one who would be held out for medical reasons. Dungy wants to rest Keiaho and Rhodes.
