Billy Horschel’s big win at the Tour Championship has only turned up the volume on a debate over whether the U.S. Ryder Cup team should have waited to make its final selections.

Horschel might be the hottest player in the game at present, but he was not among the three discretionary picks captain Tom Watson recently added to the squad that will travel to Scotland to face the powerhouse Europeans next week.

It seems the only person not questioning his exclusion is Horschel, who struggled for much of the season before finding a rhythm.

“I’ll be supportive of the U.S. team and, even with this extra win, I still don’t feel like I deserve to be on the team,” he told reporters after his victory on Sunday. “I haven’t played good enough this year. I haven’t played good enough over a two-year period to be on the team, and I understand that.”

The Americans must overcome not only a European squad led by No. 1-ranked Rory McIlroy but also the predicted cool, wet weather.

As for Horschel, the $10-million bonus he received for winning of the FedEx Cup playoffs should ease the pain of staying home. And he has something more important to worry about -- his wife is due to give birth to their first child.

“I honestly wasn’t going to play the Ryder Cup if we couldn’t induce labor early,” he said.
