Kings name former captain Rob Blake assistant general manager
The Kings have appointed their former captain and defenseman Rob Blake as their new assistant general manager.
Blake, 43, replaces Ron Hextall, the former Philadelphia Flyers goaltender who returned to that team as its assistant GM earlier this week.
Blake played 14 of his 20 seasons with the Kings, serving as captain from 1996 to 2001 and in 2007-08, and made four of his six NHL All-Star teams as a King. He also played for San Jose and Colorado.
With Los Angeles, Blake was on the 1993 Stanley Cup final team and won the franchise’s first Norris Trophy in 1998, also winning an Olympic gold medal with Canada in 2002.
The Kings’ all-time leader in games played, goals, assists and points for a defenseman, Blake has worked for the last three seasons in the NHL’s player safety department.
In his new role, he will help General Manager Dean Lombardi in contract negotiations, player personnel decisions and oversee prospects, specifically those at minor-league Manchester.
The team will make Blake available for comment later Thursday.
