Matt Harvey finds out what Mets fans really think of Matt Harvey

Share

Matt Harvey will surely give New York Mets fans a thrill when the team’s top pitcher starts the All-Star Game for the National League right there at their home park, Citi Field.

Wait, he is going to be wearing his Mets uniform, right? OK, good. Otherwise the thrill may be gone for a lot of those fans, who may not recognize the emerging star wearing anything else.

Like the street clothes he was wearing during a segment filmed for NBC’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” -- Harvey asked Mets fans what they thought of Matt Harvey without revealing that he, in fact, is Matt Harvey.

Even though Harvey actually showed some of them one of his baseball cards, he fooled just about everybody he talked to (at least the ones they showed), except a man who was actually wearing a Harvey jersey -- and it even took that guy awhile to catch on.

There were a few uncomfortable moments, mainly because the segment was filmed just days after Harvey appeared in ESPN The Magazine’s “Body Issue.” “I kind of saw him naked in ESPN ‘The Body Issue,’ so it’s kind of weird,” one man said.

Another said his wife likes Harvey’s butt.

As far as Harvey’s on-field performance goes, almost everybody had high praise for the pitcher they didn’t know they were talking to, which isn’t surprising since he’s 7-2 with an ERA of 2.35 in his first full major league season.

There was one guy who wasn’t all that impressed, though. “He’s decent,” he said of Harvey. “But he hasn’t proved enough. He’s only gone a couple months now.”
