USC women win water polo title

Stephania Haralabidis scored with six seconds remaining and USC defeated Stanford, 8-7, to win the NCAA women’s water polo championship at UCLA.

Haralabidis had five goals in helping the Trojans complete a perfect season at 26-0.

Stanford’s Kat Klass had scored with 47 seconds left and again with 11 seconds remaining to erase a 7-5 USC lead.

The national title is the fifth for the women’s water polo program and its first since 2013. USC has 102 NCAA titles, behind only UCLA (113) and Stanford (108).

No. 5-ranked USC defeated No. 9 Stanford, 14-8, at the Coliseum to become the first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation team to advance to the NCAA women’s lacrosse quarterfinals. The Trojans (20-0), seeded fifth in the tournament, set a conference record for wins in a season and will face fourth-seeded Syracuse (18-5) at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y., on Saturday. Juniors Michaela Michael and Kylie Drexel and senior Caroline deLyra scored three goals apiece for USC. Stanford finished 15-5.
