'Beaches' musical gets pre-Broadway trial at Drury Lane

As five-hankie weepers go, "Beaches" is in a class all its own. The story of a nearly 40-year friendship between a sassy Jewish singer from the Bronx and a prim, Wasp-y blue-blood from California comes from Iris Rainer Dart's 1985 novel and was made into a movie in 1988 starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey. The film famously gifted the world with one of the most iconic ballads in Top 40 Popdom — when Midler launched into "The Wind Beneath My Wings," a nation wept.
