It was 40 years ago this month that Robert Altman's masterpiece "Nashville" hit screens, but the arrival hadn't come unannounced. In March, New Yorker critic Pauline Kael had taken the extraordinary step of reviewing Altman's three-hour rough cut and proclaiming it an "orgy for movie-lovers," a "pure emotional high," and, finally, the "funniest epic vision of America ever to reach the screen."
