GOP lawmaker calls speaking to white supremacist group a mistake

In an effort to quell growing criticism, a leading House Republican said Tuesday that he regretted speaking to a white supremacist group more than a decade ago. “It was a mistake I regret, and I emphatically oppose the divisive racial and religious views groups like these hold,” Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana said in a statement. Scalise, the House majority whip, issued the statement after reports surfaced over the weekend that he spoke at a 2002 convention of the European American Unity and Rights Organization when he was a Louisiana state lawmaker.
