Deadgirl: 1 of 5 stars

Deadgirl is a River’s Edge for misogynists, a zombie movie with high schoolers struggling and failing to do the right thing when faced with a big moral choice.

Rickie, played by a Johnny Depp-ish Shiloh Fernandez, and his pal JT (Noah Segan) are a couple of high school punks who hang out, cut school and drink beer. They wander the old, abandoned “nut house” outside of town one afternoon and in the basement, find a naked young woman, apparently dead and chained up and wrapped in plastic.

Only she isn’t dead. Rickie’s first instinct is to tell someone. JT’s is to have his way with her. And invite friends to do the same.

Jenny Spain plays the zombie woman in all her nude, undead glory. But surely she had to see that there’s no honor in making an instant “cult movie” for male horror fans when that movie is about sexually assaulting a zombie. Repeatedly. I can’t quite get behind filmmakers Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel for the stylish satire potential in this. Is it a commentary on horror fanboys and just what they’ll watch without making moral judgments of their own? I wonder.
