Eat, drink, dinner, movie? Honolulu festival pairs classic food films with dining

A historic Honolulu theater will pair films with food — and we’re not talking popcorn and Milk Duds. The Screen Cuisine: Films About Food is a twist on the dinner-and-a-show concept: Buy a meal at a downtown restaurant that goes hand-in-hand with the movie you’ll see.

The Hawaii Theatre Center in the city’s Chinatown district opens the festival at 8 p.m. Aug. 19 with a screening of “The Hundred-Foot Journey.”

The 2014 film tells the story of a culinary artist from India who moves to France and opens an Indian restaurant — only to find a famous French restaurateur played by Helen Mirren become his next-door rival.

Other screening and meal combos include:

“Eat Drink Man Woman” at 2 p.m. Aug. 20, preceded by lunch at Restaurant Epic and dessert at Cake Envy. Info: (808) 587-7877

There’s also a movie package that includes dinner at the Pig & the Lady. Four courses of French cuisine are priced at $55 – or $75 if you want to go to Cake Envy for dessert. Prices are per person and include a ticket to “Chocolat.” Info and reservations: (808) 585-8255
