They spread out over 173 square miles and form animal and plant figures, including a spider, monkey, killer whale and pelican. Best viewed from the air, the geoglyphs span hundreds of feet. Researchers believe they played a role in astronomical functions.

Peru

These lines, found near Peru's coastal plains, were scraped into the Earth between 500 BC and AD 500. They spread out over 173 square miles and form animal and plant figures, including a spider, monkey, killer whale and pelican. Best viewed from the air, the geoglyphs span hundreds of feet. Researchers believe they played a role in astronomical functions.

According to the World Monuments Fund, tourism and weather threaten the Nasca Lines and a plan is needed for their preservation.
