Web Buzz: Broadcastr.com, an audio-themed website

Share

A new audio-themed website that archives location-based content and makes it easy for you to share it with friends on Facebook and Twitter.

Name: Broadcastr.com

Available for: website; iPhone and Android app coming soon.

What it does: Provides an audio platform for users to record and tell (or simply listen to) short stories. Search for tips and tales pertaining to a specific location, or scroll through a long list of topic categories such as history, love, family, funny, architecture and more. It has more than 6,000 stories posted to the site.

What’s hot: Fodor’s has partnered with Broadcastr so you’ll find all sorts of guidebook content read aloud in various locales, such as the inside scoop on the “Brooklyn Flea Market” or “Chow Down Chinatown Walk.” I also liked travel tips from unknown contributors such as Will Hines in “Hidden Tokyo Bars.” The interface is easy to navigate, and it’s simple to start recording your own channel.

What’s not: You may be just listening to people who like the sound of their own voices?

Worth it: It will mean more to parents of college grads hitting the backpacker trail for the first time. Do it for Mom and Dad instead of sending them postcards, so they won’t miss the sound of your voice.
