California: Chateau du Sureau, Grand Del Mar top TripAdvisor rankings
The people and the travel experts have spoken -- on the topic of luxury hotels. Using very different criteria, TripAdvisor travelers chose the Grand Del Mar in San Diego as the best hotel in the U.S., and AAA handed out its top rating to the castle-like Chateau du Sureau near Yosemite National Park.
Both 2014 hotel lists, plus the Forbes Travel Guide, were released this month, giving travelers many recommendations to mull. Trust the people more? TripAdvisor rankings, based on reviews and opinions of its website users, handed out 7,123 awards. Inspector-driven AAA doled out new five-diamond ratings to six hotels this year.
Among AAA’s five-diamond hotels, the 10-room Chateau du Sureau in Oakhurst, Calif., outside Yosemite is joined by Wynn Tower Suites in Las Vegas; Montage Deer Valley in Park City, Utah; the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto; the Banyan Tree Cabo Marques in Acapulco; and Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
AAA also added these five-diamond restaurants: the Restaurant at Meadowood in St. Helena, Calif.; Acadia, Grace and Sixteen, all in Chicago; Per Se in New York City; Retaurant La Taniere and Restaurant Le Patriarche, in Quebec, Canada; and Cocina de Autor in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
Besides the Grand del Mar, TripAdvisor travelers chose these as their top 10 U.S. hotels: French Quarter Inn in Charleston, S.C.; Bardessono in Yountville, Calif.; Allison Inn & Spa in Newberg, Ore.; Five Pine Lodge & Spa in Sisters, Ore.; 21c Museum Hotel Bentonville in Bentonville, Ark.; Tivoli Lodge in Vail, Colo.; the Sherry-Netherland Hotel in New York City; Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Kaupulehu in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; and the Oxford Hotel in Bend, Ore.
