Inside All Nippon Airways’ Boeing 787 Dreamliner

All Nippon Airways' first Dreamliner sits 264 passengers: 252 in economy class and 12 in business. Later versions of the plane for short-haul flights will seat 180 passengers in economy and 42 in business. Planes for long-haul flights will seat 112 passengers in economy and 46 passengers in business.

Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner entered regular service this month as All Nippon Airways began offering flights from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport to Okayama, Japan. Seven years in the making, the Dreamliner is Boeing’s first all-new plane since the 1990s. The Japanese carrier is currently the only airline to fly the Dreamliner. Here’s a look inside the plane.

LED lighting

The Dreamliner uses LED lighting, which lasts longer and consumes less energy than fluorescent bulbs. The system also gives the crew the ability to adjust light color and intensity to set the mood in the cabin.  (Kazuhiro Nogi / AFP/Getty Images)

Larger windows

Windows aboard the Dreamliner are 1.3 times larger than those of a typical aircraft. Compared with the Boeing 767, windows are 3.1 inches longer.  (John Froschauer / Associated Press)

No more shades

Doing away with screens, Boeing equipped the Dreamliner with windows that dim or brighten with a touch of a button. There’s a thin layer of gel between glass panes that can change from transparent to nearly opaque in response to electric currents.

Economy

Aboard ANA’s Dreamliner, the economy cabin is configured so rows have three sets of seats: four in the middle and two against each side of the plane. If you’ve ever wrestled another passenger for elbow room, the middle seats have a double armrest. Another innovation is seats that move forward when passengers recline, rather that backward. Business, short-haul
