California Bucket List: Strange vibrations near Joshua Tree, monarch butterflies, startling urban archaeology and a new adventure each day

Daily Deal: Long Beach aquarium free for seniors; baby seal is priceless

The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach welcomed some new critters this summer. Toby, a harbor seal pup, was born in May, and two Magellanic penguin chicks were hatched a month later. These babies have grown up a bit, enough to be ready to greet visitors this month at the aquarium. Toby joined his new public home Aug. 14, and the chicks are slated to follow suit in the next few weeks.
