New York: Skate into April at public ice rinks

I’m guessing most New Yorkers have had enough of that whole winter-wonderland thing by now. They certainly seem relieved that after such a stormy winter, most of the snow in Manhattan is melted now.

But what about us tourists from warm places, looking for that rare chance to lace on some skates? Not to worry. Though one of the city’s best-known seasonal ice-skating rinks will close Feb. 27, the rinks at Rockefeller Center and Central Park will stay in business through early April.

Here’s what’s open and when:

* The Pond at Bryant Park: This is a festive space next to the New York Public Library at 42^nd Street and Fifth Avenue. In summer, the rink area is a sprawling lawn, neighbored by restaurants and chess players. But for another week or so – until closing Feb. 27 – locals and visitors can skate for free if they bring their own skates. Skate rentals are $13. (Similarly, lockers are free, but the locks cost $9.)

* The Ice Rink at Rockefeller Center: The renowned rink, at Fifth between 49^th and 50^th streets, will remain open until the second or third Sunday in April, a representative said. The rates are $10 to $16 for adults (weekdays are cheaper than weekends) and $7.50 to $8.50 for children. Skate rentals are $8, and there’s a checkroom for your belongings.

* Wollman Rink: In Central Park near 59^th Street, this much-beloved venue will be open until April 3. Adults pay $10.25 to $14.75; kids, $5.50 to $5.75. Skate rentals are $6.25, lockers are $4.50 and because this is New York, kids, there’s a spectator fee of $5.

* Lasker Rink: Toward the Harlem end of Central Park, near 106^th street, Lasker, which serves as a swimming pool in summer, is cheaper than Wollman. For skating, it will remain open through early April. Skating fees are $6.25 for adults, $3.50 for kids, $5.50 for shoe rentals and $3.25 for lockers.
