Offbeat Traveler: Sky lanterns

Share

Similar to hot air balloons, sky lanterns have a little flame inside that causes them to propel upwards. In many parts of the world where the lunar calendar is observed, sky lanterns are released during the first full moon of the Lunar New Year, a day called Lantern Festival. They are also flown during the Mid-Autumn Festival, which occurs on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar when the moon is at its fullest.

Here’s a look at these and other unique lanterns in action.
