Pasadena adds 9 Zipcar locations for vehicle sharing

Want to try car sharing but not sure where to try it? Pasadena now has 11 spots where you can give it a whirl.

The City of Pasadena last week added nine new locations for Zipcar, the membership-based car-sharing program founded in 2000 in Cambridge, Mass.

Zipcar LA launched in December 2011. In March 2013, Avis Budget Group acquired Zipcar for $500 million.

The nine new Pasadena Zipcar spots join two existing Zipcar locations at Caltech and Westgate Apartments. Each location was chosen for its proximity to popular neighborhoods, including Old Pasadena, the Playhouse District, East Pasadena, the Civic Center District and certain Gold Line stations.

Jeff Shields, general manager of Zipcar LA, says more than 230 Zipcars are available in 80-plus locations around greater Los Angeles including more than 25 hotels such as the Farmer’s Daughter Hotel near CBS and the Standard Hotel Hollywood.

The car sharing service is available in many U.S. cities and has international locations in Canada, Britain and Spain.

Zipcar membership rates start at $6 per month or $60 annually, and Shields says hourly rentals in Los Angeles begin at $9 an hour or $73 daily.

Prices include gas, insurance, roadside assistance and up to 180 miles of driving per day. Vehicles range from hybrids and compacts to utility vehicles and minivans.
